Gallery: Shirakawa-go

This remote, mountain valley between Takayama and Kanazawa is best known for its farmhouses in the thatched-roof, A-frame style called "Gassho-zukuri" (hands in prayer). Over 100 of these houses have been moved here from surrounding areas. These houses were built to withstand the heavy snowfalls this area of Japan receives in the winter, and more amazingly, they are built without any nails.
