Tsumago is located on the former Nakasendo highway, which connected Kyoto and Tokyo. Many post towns sprung up along the highway to support the many travelers on the highway. Tsumago is the most beautiful and authentic of these towns that remain. Electrical wires, TV antennas and telephone poles were hidden from sight along the main road. As a result, Tsumago looks much like it did in the 18th century.
