Gallery: Shiretoko

Shiretoko, an Ainu word meaning “end of the world”, lives up to its name. The Shiretoko Peninsula stretches out 70 kilometers from the northeast coast of Hokkaido into the Sea of Okhotsk. Covered with virgin forest and snow-covered mountain peaks, there are no roads on most of the peninsula, thus making a boat cruise the easiest way to see Shiretoko. Along the coast, 600 foot vertical, rock cliffs for which Shiretoko is famous for can be seen. Waterfalls cascade over the edge of these cliffs into the ocean, with snow-covered peaks in the background, making Shiretoko an idyllic setting.
