Gallery: Sounkyo Onsen

Located in the heart of Daisetsuzan National Park in the center of Hokkaido, Sounkyo Onsen is crowded into a small mountain valley surrounded by 300 foot vertical rock cliffs and a rushing mountain river. Sounkyo Onsen is the perfect jumping-off point for the overnight hike to Asahidake Onsen. For those with lower ambitions, you can ride to the top of the cable car where you will find a viewing platform with magnificent views of Kurodake (Black Mountain) and the connected mountain ranges. If you have the energy, you can follow the trail leading from the top of the cable car to the top of Kurodake. Or, ride a bicycle along the river through the steep-sided gorge to the numerous waterfalls cascading down the rock cliffs. Be sure to take the walk up the hill 20 minutes on the opposite canyon wall for the best view of the waterfalls. Or just relax at the village with a European flair by making use of the Ashi-yu (foot bath). The natural mineral baths at the onsen are a perfect end to a busy day of hiking or bike-riding.
