A former castle town, Matsuyama is located in the northwestern corner of Shikoku Island. During the Edo Period, Matsuyama was in important city on the island of Shikoku. Today, it is best known as the home of Dogo Onsen, the oldest onsen in Japan. Written records as far back as the 6th century mention Dogo Onsen. Matsuyama was also the place where the novel “Botchan” takes place. This novel was written during the late 19th century and describes the difficulties during that time when Japan was modernizing after 250 years of rule by the Tokugawa Shoguns, and is practically required reading in many Japanese schools.
