Osaka

Osaka Details

Osaka is Japan’s second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo, and Japan’s third largest city. It has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai Region for many centuries. Before the Nara Period, Osaka was designated the capital of Japan for a short time. And once again, in the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi chose Osaka as the location for his castle, and for a short time Osaka was once again the capital of Japan.

Osaka is known for its food, in Japan and around the world. There is a saying in Japan: “Kyotoites are financially ruined by overspending on clothing, Osakans are ruined by spending on food.” Regional cuisine includes okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), takoyaki (octopus in fried batter) and kushikatsu (skewers of fried meats, fish and vegetables).

Dotonbori-dori

One of Osaka’s most popular tourist destinations, Dotonbori street runs parallel to the Dotonbori canal. It is a popular shopping and entertainment district and is also known as a food destination. At night it is lit by hundreds of neon lights and mechanized signs, including the famous Glico Running Man sign and Kani Doraku crab sign.

Hozenji Yokocho and Temple

Hozenji Yokocho is a narrow alley near Dotonbori. This atmospheric alley lined by traditional restaurants and izakaya has retained an old-time atmosphere. At Hozenji Temple, local merchants and visitors alike pour water over the temple’s moss-covered statues for good luck.
